Dreaming of a Zellige tile shower? Here's what to know.

Zellige tile is as popular as ever among interior designers and homeowners looking to incorporate organic color and a timeless feel to their spaces. This Moroccan tile is known for being handmade, having an irregular shape, and having a range of color variations from one piece to another. But can you use Zellige tile in a shower? Yes!

Here’s what you need to know before incorporating Zellige into your new bathroom design.

Why Opt for Zellige Tile in Your Shower?

A Zellige tile shower will give your bathroom a unique, one-of-a-kind look that is different from any other ceramic or porcelain tile. Here’s why Zellige is a great choice for shower walls:

-Handmade, One-of-a-Kind Look

Each Zellige tile is made by hand using a centuries-old technique, which makes each tile different in color, texture, and finish.  Each tile begins as raw clay, carefully shaped and hand-cut by artisans whose expertise has been passed down through generations. The tiles are then hand-dipped, one by one into the glaze. This gives your shower walls a look that no mass-produced tiles can come close to.

-Glossy, Light-Reflecting Surface

The natural glaze of Zellige tile improves the light reflection. This is especially useful in small bathrooms where the extra light will give the space a brighter, airier look.

-Durability and Water Resistance

Zellige tiles are also non-porous because of the high-temperature firing process. When installed correctly with the right waterproofing, they make a perfect, long-lasting surface for wet areas, such as showers and pools.

-Easy to clean

Zellige can be cleaned with a mild soap, or gentle cleaner such as Simple Green. For more information, see our post How to Clean Zellige Tile.

Some Precautions to Take When Installing Zellige in a Shower.

Even though Zellige tiles are beautiful, some rules need to be followed during their installation:.

-Waterproofing is Essential

Covering a surface with tile does not guarantee waterproofing. The sub-surface must be waterproofed before tiling to avoid water seepage behind the tiles. Please refer to our Zellige Installation Tips for more information. Additionally, we recommend sealing all of our Zellige tiles with Dry-Treat Premium Impregnating Seater (formerly Stain-Proof Original).

-Accepting the Imperfections

Zellige is handmade, therefore, small chips, pits, cracks and color changes are all part of its manufacturing process. These imperfections are part of the tile’s beauty and authenticity but should be taken into consideration before installation, especially if you want a more consistent look.

-Can You Use Zellige Tile on a Shower Floor?

Yes! To be able to slope the shower floor properly towards the drain, we recommend using our 2x2 or Marrakech mosaics.  The smaller size also means more grout joints, which gives more grip against slipping.

Colorful Zellige Shower Design Ideas

If you are looking for ideas, then here are some of the ways through which you can incorporate Zellige tile in your bathroom:

White Zellige: Palacio White Zellige tile is simple and refreshing with a touch of Moroccan style. The light-reflecting surface makes the space look bigger and brighter.  This is a good choice for someone who wants the handmade look of Zellige but not the wide color variation.

Earthy Tones: Sahara Sand, Tangier Moon, and Casablanca Tusk will give your bathroom a cozy and natural feel.

Bold & Dramatic: Rabat Sea and Ouazzane Green will make a bold and elegant statement in the shower.
