Limestone Tile FAQs: Everything You’ve Ever Wondered (But Maybe Didn’t Want to Ask)
We get it—choosing tile can feel like walking into a really beautiful party where everyone already seems to know each other. And when it comes to limestone tile, there’s a lot of buzz and even more questions. Is it durable? Does it play well with water? Is it going to stress you out every time someone walks on it with wet shoes?
Don’t worry—we’ve got you. Below, we’re answering your most common questions about limestone floor tiles, from durability to maintenance, and all the slightly nerdy stuff in between.

Is limestone tile durable?
Short answer: Yes. Slightly longer answer: It’s a natural stone, so it’s strong—but it’s also softer and more porous than, say, granite. That’s actually part of its charm.
Tumbled limestone tiles, like the ones we offer, are especially forgiving. The slightly textured finish hides wear beautifully, and the already-soft edges mean you’re not panicking over every nick or scuff. It ages gracefully, kind of like your favorite leather bag.
That said, sealing is key. Which brings us to…
Does limestone tile need to be sealed?
Absolutely. Limestone is naturally porous, which means it can absorb spills and stains if left unsealed. Applying a high-quality sealer (we recommend Stain-Proof Premium Impregnating Sealer) helps protect your tile from moisture, dirt, and the occasional red wine mishap.
Want to enhance the color too? Go with a color-enhancing sealer—it’ll deepen the tones without making the tile look “wet.” (Fun tip: If you want a preview of the enhanced look, just splash a little water on your tile. The sealer will mimic that depth, minus the water shine.)
Is limestone tile good for bathrooms?
Yes, yes, and yes. But, say it with me: you have to seal it properly.
Limestone tile in bathrooms creates an earthy, spa-like vibe that’s hard to beat. The tumbled finish also adds slip resistance, which is a win for wet areas. Just make sure you’re using a sealer appropriate for wet zones—and if you’re installing it in a shower, talk to your installer about proper prep and waterproofing.
How do you clean limestone tiles?
Keep it simple. A pH-neutral cleaner, such as Simple Green, and a soft mop or cloth is your best bet. Skip anything acidic (like vinegar or lemon-based products)—they can etch the stone and undo all your good sealing work.
Think of it like skincare: gentle and consistent wins the race.
How do you cut limestone tiles?
Very carefully. (Kidding, sort of.)
Limestone is softer than other natural stones, so it’s easier to cut—but it still requires the right tools. A wet saw with a diamond blade is the go-to choice. However, we always recommend working with a pro for installation.
Is limestone tile high-maintenance?
Not at all—once sealed, limestone tile is surprisingly low-fuss. Sweep or vacuum regularly to keep grit from scratching the surface, mop with a gentle cleaner now and then, and reapply sealer as recommended by the manufacturer.
